5 ways I will support your child
PLAY THERAPY GOLD COAST
When your child comes to play therapy, I will provide them with a secure space where they will feel safe enough to explore, take healthy risks, and nurture their natural ability to heal and grow.
The toys and tools your child uses will become their words. Their play will become their language.
I will shape and guide whatever your child expresses through play to support them in improving their adaptive behaviours, social skills, and emotional abilities.
FAMILY PARTICIPATION
As your child’s parent/caregiver, you play a huge role in your child’s healing!
I will invite you to join your child for a few play therapy sessions (filial therapy) where you will get a better understanding of your child’s unique needs, and how best to support them at home.
Your active participation in your child’s therapy is hugely beneficial as it will help to strengthen the bond between you and your child. Having a great relationship with your child is a critical element for ensuring your child’s ongoing development and future success.

The first, 90-minute play therapy intake session on the Gold Coast is with parents/caregivers only and will be a time to get to know each other a little better. You will get an opportunity to share more about your child and family situation, and what you are hoping to gain from therapy. I will then explain the therapeutic process to you and answer any questions you may have.
If we feel that we are the right fit for each other, we will put a service agreement in place. This agreement will outline my responsibilities to you, and your responsibilities as a client. I will honour and respect your right to freedom of choice.
Play Therapy sessions for children are 60 minutes in duration and, depending on your individual plan, may occur weekly or fortnightly.

In the event of my own illness or an emergency, I will give you as much notice as possible and offer you an alternative time.
Please note that sessions will be cancelled if you are under the influence of alcohol or other illegal drugs. This cancellation will incur a full fee.
Confidentiality is an essential aspect of the counselling relationship. Everything that is discussed in our session together is kept in the strictest confidence.
I usually keep brief notes about each session which is securely stored on an online database. Only I have access to these notes. Upon written request, you may view any information I have kept about your therapy sessions. Please allow up to 48 hours for this information to be made available to you.
Occasionally I may want to make an audio recording of our session together to monitor my work as a therapist. This would only occur with your prior knowledge and permission. This data will be safely disposed of after use.
As a registered member of the ACA, I am required to have regular supervision. I may need to discuss our therapy sessions with my supervisor. If so, I will not disclose your name or anything that would enable you to be identified during these discussions.
In certain circumstances, we may have to make exceptions to the general rules of confidentiality:
~ if there is convincing evidence that you intend to harm yourself, I might need to inform your referring doctor or your emergency contact,
~ if you disclose that you intend to harm others (e.g. abuse of children is a mandatory reporting offence which I am bound by law to report),
~ where there is a legal requirement, or if I am ordered by a court of law to disclose information,
~ you have given me approval to provide a written report, or to discuss information with relevant professionals, e.g. your referring GP, other health care professionals or your employer.
Where possible I would attempt to talk this through with you before breaking our confidentiality agreement.
It is my responsibility to work with you to reach a recognised ending when it is evident that you have achieved your therapeutic goals. You may wish to cease your sessions with me when it is apparent that counselling is no longer helping or when you decide to end.
Should I be unable to support your specific needs, I may need to refer you on to another professional with more expertise. At all times, I will discuss this with you to prevent any potential risk of emotional or psychological harm.
